Oreck Vacuum Cleaners

Article By: Patrick G. Warner

We are currently investigating the Oreck Halo Vacuum and ProShield Plus Air Cleaner. Oreck Corporation, known for their brand of vacuum cleaners, made apparently false claims that the two appliances can reduce illnesses, reduce the risk of flu, and eliminate all germs and allergens.

Through online advertisements, the Oreck Corporation pictured the vacuum with text stating that it would "help reduce the flu on virtually any surface and in the air in your home" and that the air cleaner would "capture and destroy many airborne viruses like the flu".

During an infomercial, Oreck claimed the Halo "kill[s] up to 99.9% of bacteria exposed to (the vacuum's) light in one second or less" and that the vacuum "has been tested and shown to kill up to 99.9% of common germs, plus dangerous pathogens like E. Coli and MRSA".

The FTC has charged Oreck Corp. with making false claims about the Halo Vacuum Cleaner and the ProShield Air Cleaner.
