On June 16, 2009 the Federal Food and Drug Administration warned consumers to stop using and to throw away three zinc-containing Zicam intranasal products. These products may cause a loss of sense of smell.
The products affected by the FDA warning are:
1. Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel (15mL, NDC 62750-003-10)
2. Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs (20 swabs, NDC 67250-003-20)
3. Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs, Kids Size (20 swabs, NDC 67250-003-21)
The FDA has expressed special concerns regarding use of these products by children. Children may be experiencing a loss of their sense of smell but are less likely to be able to communicate the condition.
Matrix Initiatives, Inc., manufactured and marketed the homeopathic remedy, called Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel. The active ingredient is zinc and has been known for decades as being toxic to the cells of the nose and harmful to the scent tissue in the upper reaches in the nasal cavity.
